Caring for an adult child or family member with special needs is a full-time commitment that demands immense physical, mental, and emotional energy.

Families who support adults with developmental disabilities often place their own health, social lives, and career aspirations on hold to ensure their loved ones are safe and loved. If you are starting to feel exhausted or stretched thin, it is okay to ask for help. Harmony Home Care Agency provides professional, compassionate respite care Burlington County NJ families can rely on to recharge.

Whether you need a few hours on the weekend to run errands, a regular weekday block to focus on personal health, or support during a family vacation, our experienced Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) step in smoothly. We cooperate with other primary DDD services, including Individual Support Services (ISS) and Community Based Supports (CBS).

What Is Respite Care?

In simple terms, respite care is temporary care designed to give primary family caregivers a well-deserved break. It is not about replacing you or shifting your loved one's long-term living arrangement; rather, it is a supportive partnership that sustains your family for the long run.

Unlike general babysitting or clinical nursing support, respite care for individuals with developmental disabilities is structured and developmental. It is delivered by trained professionals who understand sensory sensitivities, behavioral support strategies, and positive reinforcement techniques.

Respite care can take place directly in your home, allowing you to rest in another room or leave the house completely, or it can be delivered in community settings. Our wellness-forward philosophy guarantees that your loved one won't just sit in front of a screen while you're away.

What a Respite Session Looks Like with Harmony

👋

Warm Arrival & Transition

Our caregiver arrives on time, greeting your loved one warmly. We conduct a quick transition check-in to review their mood, physical state, and any specific preferences for the day.

🏃

Active Engagement & Movement

True to our philosophy, "Care That Keeps People Moving," we engage your loved one in active tasks. This could include a walk in a local park, range-of-motion stretching, physical exercise, or practicing daily living skills.

🧩

Cognitive & Social Enrichment

We play interactive games, complete puzzles, practice communication tools, or explore hobbies. This keeps their mind active and builds social confidence.

📝

Safe Transition Back

Before leaving, the caregiver helps transition your loved one back to their primary routine, providing you with a brief log of activities, meals, and highlights of the session.

How DDD Funding Covers Respite Care

Funding for respite care in New Jersey is made possible through Medicaid waiver programs administered by the Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD). When an individual over the age of 21 is enrolled with DDD, they receive a customized budget allocation.

To have respite care covered, it must be written directly into the Person-Centered Service Plan (PCSP). Your Support Coordinator plays a central role in this. During your annual or quarterly PCSP meeting, you can request that Harmony Home Care Agency be selected as your designated provider for Respite services.

Once this authorization is in place, Harmony handles the rest. We bill DDD directly for every session we deliver, ensuring there are no bills, copays, or surprise charges for your family.
